Lately, in Tokyo, the sun sets with a wonderful light reflecting on the buildings in the neighborhood of the office. I took some pictures but they hardly give justice to the real beauty of the light.
See them for yourself here.
I had the opportunity to take a picture of the moon tonight with my new camera and I wanted to put it up on the web but I couldn't really find any section where it could fit ... I thought of Tokyo because it was taken there but on the other hand, it didn't show anything specific to Tokyo. That's why I created a new section called "Just anything" which is quite explicit ! It will contain all kinds of pictures I take which don't have any specific theme, just for the pleasure of taking pictures !
I also added some pictures of Tokyo, especially Shinjuku, that I had taken a while ago but I was too lazy then to include them in the page :)
A dramatic change in the look of my homepage, as I was a little tired of this bright background and the Pitou theme was getting a little too old ... Above all, I got Photoshop 6 and although I didn't use its new functionalities much, it kindda incited me to renew my homepage a little. If you really want to see something great done with Photoshop, go and visit my friend Fred's homepage ! I wish I had his faith (or his talent) in making homepages, so instead, I'm sticking to a very sober (but yet classy homepage ;P).
So far, I've changed the look of all pages, but some banners still have to be made with the cool sepia effect. I was very enthusiastic about doing it first but it's quite a big job and if you look carefully, you might notice the order in which I made them, the nicest one being the first one I made of course ;P ...
I'll keep posting the new pages with the new banners little by little but I really wanted to upload a first draft of this new homepage :)
Oh yeah, for those who are lucky and have the version 6 of Internet Explorer, they should be able to see the change in the color of the scroll bar on the right :) It's nothing but I thought it was quite cool...
Apart from that, I didn't take many pictures lately, I was quite busy in the office at last week end was really the first week end in 3 months I didn't have to go to the office !
It's been a while already since it happened but I've never mentioned it: I
bought a domainname for my homepage. Since then, this homepage should no
longer be accessed through http://www.neanmoins.com/eddie or
http://www.kochira.com/eddie (neanmoins.com and kochira.com actually belonging
to Yves, he just let me use a subdirectory so far) but through
http://www.shiromi.com.
For the non-speaking people, shiromi means "egg white" ... You must be
wondering why I've chosen such a name ... Well, I was just browsing my
dictionary for a Japanese word (more original and easier to find in the list
of the non-reserved domainnames) which would be easy to remember for a French
person. Plus, I kindda like the meaning too ;P ... I was first thinking about
harusame.com, which means "Spring rain" but it was already taken so I ended up
with shiromi.com !
I added a counter to my homepage and also I wrote a quick script that scans
the server's logs in order to see what are the most popular pages :)
So far the most popular pictures seem to be the group pictures at parties and
some of my Kyoto pictures :)
Regarding the counter, it only increments if the IP address is seen for the 1st time, so thanks for helping but it's no use clicking the refresh button hundreds of times to increase the number ;P
Also, some minor changes: I was cleaning my hard disk when I found some pictures I took some day from my apartment but which never made it to my homepage, so here they are :)
I've just updated this homepage a little, those of you who know this site very well will notice the difference ;P
I'm learning more and more from the GoLive tutorials available on the web and though the changes are still not really visible, this homepage keeps evolving ! For example, I used some rollovers for the menu on the left side to make the links look active, I gathered all the java script into a single file, some pictures are preloaded, so they can be available right away.
I also tried to add some DHTML, but some some reasons, it didn't work when I uploaded the page while it was showing fine on my hard disk. I'll look into it later !
So far, I was filling my homepage of pictures taken with my digital camera but the site in itself wasn't really changing. Moreover, when I was looking at Fred's homepage, I was a little ashamed of mine, designed with FrontPage from an existing template !
Well, I recently got Adobe GoLive and my life's changed (sounds like a commercial but it's true!) : you can do some really nice things and at least, you see what you do and you have a perfect control on the design of your homepage. FrontPage was really too strict and you can't really do all the things you would like to do. GoLive really makes you feel like working on your homepage !
Thanks to Fred and the study of some homepage (especially the one of cyberguard, which I use to make my own), I finally understood how to use tables to make a page look nice (with the shadow of the borders and all).
Yves also gave me the rights to execute some cgi-bin on his server and for my first cgi-bin, I thought I really needed a guestbook so that my friends (or anybody) can drop a message. Well, so far, I didn't get as many messages as I expected, but well ...
Oh well ... I finally decided to work on my homepage again, after more than 5 months without doing anything ! I actually got my own computer recently, which enables me not to stay in the office until the morning to work on my homepage (or just to work as this picture shows) or go back to the office on week ends !
I've also sold my soul to the devil since some of you might have noticed that I'm using FrontPage (argh!) to create the new version of this homepage. Indeed, I was thinking about doing everything "by hand" but html is such a heavy language that I feel too lazy to learn it and Netscape is really too terrible ! So here I am with an easily created homepage which still looks like thousands of other ones created by FrontPage, but at least, this new version will hopefully get updated more often !
Since there is nothing to do at home, I take a deep breath and decide to update my homepage. I decide not to use FrontPage, which is very painful to use, especially because I have a Linux Internet PC and FrontPage is installed on my Office PC and of course, for security reasons, they are on different networks.
That is why I take the decision to use Netscape Composer directly on my Internet PC and do a FTP on the server after this. I thought it would be easy and quick but I didn't quite realize Netscape was really a $#@*Y% !!! As long as you type html text, it is rather stable but as soon as you try to insert images, links or change the properties of a page, you'd better pray and wish you had saved all the changes before ! I wasted almost half of my time on that day in reopening Netscape every time it crashes and redo the things I had already done !
Now, I've decided to do the basic stuff with Netscape composer and do all the changes directly though modifying the source code with e-macs ("e-macs is great", dixit Yves) or vi. Moreover, it enables me to learn a little more about html and to be sure that nothing stupid is inserted in the source code without me noticing !
I also set a daily task which will change the picture on the main page every day. Indeed, thanks to Yves, I have a direct access to the Linux server, which enables me to run some scripts.
Well, after this, the homepage still looks basic but at least, it has different pictures and begins to look like something close to a homepage :) ! I defined the "backbone" of the homepage and I made sure it will be easy to update... if I have the time to do it ;P !
I decide to correct this $#@^ graphic bug and I decide to edit the html source code generated by FrontPage. I also realize that this software really does stupid things, adding useless lines ! After this, the length of the source code is divided by 3 or 4 ! The homepage doesn't really look nicer but at least, people won't yell at me anymore because their Netscape couldn't see my homepage correctly !
I've decided to update my homepage and use Microsoft FrontPage, which proposes a wide range of features... Unfortunately, they are not compatible with Netscape and when you try to browse my homepage, you cannot see two of the four frames I originally designed. Moreover, if you're using wherever you go after having visited my homepage, you have a graphic bug : a trace of the frame remains and you have to close and reopen Netscape to make it disappear !! Beware : dangerous homepage :) !
The homepage in itself is made of an empty frame which was supposed to contain the "map" of the homepage and of a main frame containing a picture and a short sentence.
The first picture was me standing up with a torn swimming suit and seaweed going out from it ! I had to change the picture after all the complaints I received from Yves (the owner of the server), who kept telling me that it looked like a porn site, from Usui-san's mother (!!) who laughed so loud when she saw the picture (which was the purpose of it, by the way) !
After that, I put some other softer pictures, but the homepage doesn't really change in itself.
The account on Yves' server is officially created, but I still need to create my homepage.
Usui-san suggests me to put something, even the simplest sentence would do it, just to be sure that the link to my "homepage" will work ...
